Settle up

Settle up is about money between travellers. It is separate from money still owed to suppliers such as hotels, airlines, tour operators and car hire companies.

Before you settle

Each expense should have a saved split, so BucketBuddy knows who owns which share. A split can be saved before or after the expense is paid. See Expenses and splits.

How do you want to settle expenses?

Money asks one question in Settle up, and there are two answers.

Request as you go. When you pay for another traveller, you can request their share straight away.

Settle at the end. Wait until later and BucketBuddy will combine everyone's paid expenses before working out the final repayments. BucketBuddy keeps track of everyone's shares and payments, then works out who should pay whom with as few payments as possible.

Changing the answer only changes when repayments happen. Your expenses and saved shares stay exactly as they are.

See who pays whom

1. 1Open Money, then Settle up.
2. 2Press See who pays whom to see the payments BucketBuddy recommends before marking anything as settled.
3. 3When the list looks right, create the repayments. Everyone receives their own summary.

If there is nothing between travellers yet, BucketBuddy says so and keeps tracking shares until you are ready.

Requesting during the trip

If you have already paid for someone else, use Request on that expense rather than waiting. Request appears once the expense is paid or partly paid. Splitting an expense on its own never asks anyone for money.

Reading the numbers

• Still owed to you is requested reimbursement you have not received yet.
• You owe is an outstanding request another traveller has sent you.
• Still to pay suppliers is money due to hotels, airlines and tours, not to travellers. An unpaid hotel can exist even when no traveller owes anyone anything.

Open the trip report at any time for a printable summary of every expense, share and payment.

Currencies

Expenses keep their original currency. BucketBuddy uses the saved converted value when showing trip totals and settlement amounts. See Currency conversion.
